Cruising Tip #4 by Tor Pinney                                                                                                                          Back to Cruising Tips

PORTABLE SHOWER CAN

For years I've been using a 3-gallon insecticide spray can as a portable pressure water dispenser. You'll find them in any hardware store. Simply replace its long gardening spray nozzle with an ordinary kitchen hand-spray nozzle and it's ready to go.

I use mine primarily as a cockpit shower, but it serves as well in the shower stall belowdecks. The can provides portable pressure water for other purposes as well, such as rinsing off the spray dodger, solar panels, snorkel gear and dishes.

The can is usually lashed on deck where the sun can heat up the water during the day. I painted mine flat black to facilitate this. On cloudy days or in cool weather, I heat up water on the stove and pour it in. One pot of boiling water added to 2 gallons of cool water in the can produces a perfect bathing temperature. The shower can provides me with a hot shower at anchor or underway, in any weather, indoors or out, without having to run the engine to make hot water in the ship's system.
