THE CRUISING SAILBOAT’S SPARE PARTS CHECKLIST
© 2011 Tor Pinney All Rights Reserved

Adapted from my book, “Ready for Sea! – How to
Outfit the Modern Cruising Sailboat” (Sheridan House)

There’s an old sailors’ adage that laments, "Any part you have you won't need, and any part you need you won't have.” This spare parts list is intended to help you fare better, reminding you of many spare items commonly needed on board a cruising sailboat. However, this list should not be considered complete for every vessel on every voyage. It is ultimately each captain’s responsibility to ensure that his vessel is equipped with everything it needs.

The spare parts carried aboard will necessarily be limited by weight, space, and budget constraints. You'll want to give first priority to things that may contribute to the safety of the vessel; that will enable you to make port no matter what happens at sea. Second priority spares are those that will be hard to find and/or expensive in your destination ports. Last come non-essential, normally easy to buy spares that you might nevertheless want available to you in remote places.
