If you think
bribing government officials only happens in
third-world countries, think again. There are few
places in the world where the wholesale bribery of
elected representatives thrives as openly and legally
as in the good old U.S.A. Here's the how and why of
it, and a way to end this very destructive behavior:
No politician can
get elected to a national office in America these days
without spending huge amounts of money on advertising
and self-promotion, simply because their competitors do. Most
of that campaign funding comes from big corporations
and special-interest billionaires. These self-serving
backers bankroll our elected representatives in return
for "favors," big favors that often wind up costing us
taxpayers billions of dollars and degrade our lives
and lifestyles to an incalculable extent. What it
amounts to is, we get less so they can have more. This
grand theft is only possible because our
so-called representatives are being bribed, openly and
legally, and as a result their first allegiance is no
longer to us, the people. They have pledged allegiance
to sponsorship, and to the big money for which it
stands. Shameful and corrupt, obviously, but this is
the new American way.
It seems impossible that this could happen in the
United States of America. Yet we have lost the
representative government upon which our republic was
founded. Our new, sold-to-the-highest-bidder political
system is a global embarrassment and a national
disaster, heralding nothing less than the end of
American democracy as we have known it. I find that
both frightening and infuriating.
But what can you and I, ordinary citizens, do to stop
this blatant, rampant corruption of our government
officials? How can we fight the powerful
mega-billionaires, their pocket politicians and their Washington insider
tactics?
The answer is
